Welcome to the Japanese style of Reiki. The following information will give you an overview of our training in this style as well as the many benefits our classes have to offer. The Japanese style is the first class in our training program, therefore all those who are new to Reiki begin their training here.
The Beginners class or First Degree (Shoden) will teach you all the skills you need to be an effective healer.
Traditional Japanese Reiki is a unique hands-on healing system originating in Japan in the late 19th century. The system is based on the teachings of Dr. Mikao Usui and successive teachers from the Reiki Gakkai, (Reiki Learning Society).
This healing system, propagated by Dr. Usui, is known as the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. The Usui Reiki Ryoho was developed in Japan under the guidance and unbroken lineage of the Original Reiki Society. It was this society, established shortly after Dr. Usui's death in 1926 that had the vision to preserve and continue the legacy which Dr. Usui began.
For many western (Takata) trained Reiki practitioners, the Japanese Reiki tradition was thought to have been lost during Japans involvement in WWII. It was shortly before the war that a somewhat simplified Reiki style made its way to Hawaii (and thereafter the rest of the world) in the 1940's; this being Mrs. Takata’s Reiki Style. Since then, there have been many variations added or taken away from Western Reiki, which accounts for the many Reiki styles available today. Returning to the source of the Japanese teachings guarantees an authentic Reiki transmission and access to a pure Reiki system. As well as learning the original methods, students can now study Reiki in a similar fashion to the methods used by the Reiki Gakkai.
How is Japanese Reiki Different? The main difference between traditional Japanese Reiki and the more common Western Style is the inclusion of Japanese meditation techniques & Chi Kung style exercises to strengthen ones ability to channel energy. These techniques offer many benefits for spiritual development and self-healing. The Usui Reiki attunements, which are gentle, yet powerful, enable all participants to experience a profound connection within the 1st hour of the seminar.
Although the History and Lineage of the Japanese Reiki Ryoho can be found on our Reiki History page, this non-Takata Reiki lineage and influence originates from the following teachers: Usui Sensei, Taketomi Sensei, Koyoma Sensei, and Doi Sensei. The following is an outline of the stages of training offered by the Institute in the Japanese Usui Reiki Ryoho Tradition.
Beginners Workshop - Shoden - First Degree Reiki Workshop
The methods presented in this tradition are based (in part) on the original teachings of Dr. Usui. This lineage follows on from Dr. Usui's students' direct teachings, maintaining an unbroken and alive Reiki system that is taught in Japan to this day.
These traditional methods are available for beginners or can be reviewed by existing Reiki students at the level corresponding to that currently being practised.
During the training each student receives the accompanying course manual, and Reiki certificate of attendance. We also offer ongoing support to all our students in the form of our quarterly on-line Reiki newsletter, as well as access to our weekly student clinics and on-going mentorship.
The International Institute for Reiki Training does not discriminate between students of different Reiki lineages (provided ones' previous training meets a basic standard), therefore, a student can participate in our courses at every level*.
* Please note that at some levels, students require certain training preliminaries.
Our Beginners Seminar will empower you to heal yourself and others. Below is an outline of what is taught:
Within the two-day period, the Reiki hand positions are taught along with the theory of Reiki and its historical tradition. Included are many of Dr. Usui’s original spiritual and energy enhancing exercises.
These include:
- Hikari no Kokyu-ho – The traditional breathing and visualization method for merging with the Reiki energy.
- Gassho Kokyu-ho – The traditional method of breathing through and sensitizing the hands.
- Kenyoku-ho - The traditional method of purifying the energy field and internal organs.
- Reiki Undo – A breathing exercise with movement to awaken the bodies’ energy channels.
- Gassho Meditation – A meditation technique with concentration on the hands for establishing mindfulness and deep awareness.
- Nentatsu ho - The traditional method for purifying obstacles, clearing patterns and creating what you want.
- Jakikiri Joka-ho – The traditional method of purifying rooms and blessing objects.
- Reiki Shower – A technique for cleansing the energy field and body, which increases vitality.
- Chakra Kassei Kokyu-ho – (Chakra Breathing) – A breathing technique to activate and energise the chakras.
- Reiki Mawashi - (Reiki in a Group) A traditional method of Reiki circle or Reiki current which establishes a connection of Reiki energy between two or more people.
- Shuchu Reiki – The traditional method of a group treatment or concentrated Reiki for healing.
In addition to these techniques, the 4 essential Shoden attunements are given to each student individually. During the class a considerable amount of time is dedicated to experiential hands on healing. This includes self-healing treatment and how to give another a full body treatment. Participants will also have many opportunities to put what you have learnt into action during our practice sessions. This not only helps to gain a familiarity with the material, but also holds you in good standing for future practice.
The four Reiki attunements activate a 21 day integration process. This is where the full alignment of the Beginners level takes place. It is during this time that new students are encouraged to participate in the self-healing methods on a daily level, as well as attend our practice sessions to refine their skills and Reiki ability.
Learning Reiki establishes each participant with a permanent alignment to the Reiki frequency. What this means is that one will always have this healing ability which can then be used daily, to enhance the quality of ones personal and spiritual life.
Apart from the immediate benefits of deep relaxation and inner peace that this level brings, ongoing practice awakens greater self awareness, the pacification of negative emotions and an enhancement of ones sensory perception. By simply applying the basic self-healing techniques you will become re-acquainted with yourself, your body and your mind. These methods also enhance meditation and restful sleep.
Duration: Weekend: two days – 9:30am to 5pm. On the Saturday of the class arrival time is 9:15am (15 minutes before start time) This is in order to complete your registration, settle the balance fo your tuition fees and settle into the class environment.

Preparations: The workshop is an opportunity to go deep. It is therefore recommended to keep the night prior (Friday), the night during (Saturday) and night concluding (Sunday) quiet and relaxing. Try not to plan big parties but instead use the time to relax, nurture yourself and go within. Each time a session is completed, the practitioner records this on the IIRT assessment sheet and obtains the client's signature and comments.
Once a total of 30 hours has been tallied, these are submitted to the IIRT Director for assessment. A Completion Certificate is then issued, granting the qualification of an IIRT approved and Certified First Degree Reiki Practitioner.
